All patients with a breast symptom should see their GP to determine whether a referral to the breast clinic is necessary. The Breast clinic receives approximately 3,000 new referrals per annum. Patients referred ‘urgently for suspected cancer’ are seen within 14 days and routine referrals usually within 6 weeks.
Four clinics a week are held for patients referred with symptoms. The breast clinic appointment consists of a consultation and a combination of diagnostic investigations. The majority of patients will receive a diagnosis before they leave the clinic.
Patients are given appropriate advice about follow-up depending upon the investigations and results of their diagnostic visit. They will either be discharged or given an appointment for the results of their further investigations.
