Lymphoedema is a swelling caused by a build up of lymph fluid in the surface tissues of the body. This build up is as a result of damage to the lymph system because of surgery or radiotherapy to the lymph nodes in the axilla and surrounding area. On rare occasions it can be due to cancer cells invading the lymph system.
The lymph nodes and vessels that have been damaged or removed cannot be replaced. Lymphoedema is, therefore, a long term condition. It leads to changes in the tissues such as fibrosis and an increased risk of infection. The swelling then becomes even more difficult to control. Left untreated the condition will deteriorate.
The Lymphoedema Service, based at the Parapet Breast Unit, is provided for the management of lymphoedema secondary to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer for patients resident in East Berkshire.
The service is offered daily between 9am – 2pm, home visits can be arranged in special circumstances.
