The role of the specialist breast care nurse (keyworker) is primarily to support women who have, or fear they have, breast cancer. She provides information, physical, psychological and spiritual monitoring/support, counselling, and practical advice to patients and carers from diagnosis through treatment, rehabilitation and beyond. Referral can be arranged to additional support services, e.g. psychology, where the patient or BCN identify a need for more specialised support/advice.
The team of Breast Care Nurse Specialists (key workers) are based at the Parapet and are available 5 days a week between the hours of 9am and 5pm. They are present at all key consultations in a patient’s cancer journey. Their services can be accessed directly by the patient and/or carer.
In addition to their work at the Parapet, BCNs visit patients on the wards, at home, and can accompany patients attending clinics, related to their breast treatments, held outside of the Parapet.
The Breast Care Nurse specialists have all completed specialist advanced studies in Breast Care/Oncology nursing including communication skills.
All are skilled in prosthesis fitting and deliver the service in a designated facility offering both privacy and comfort.
