The Labour Ward is where the majority of our mums choose to give birth.
Each of the 10 delivery rooms contains all the equipment needed for a normal delivery.
Bathrooms and showers are adjacent to the delivery rooms, which are not en-suite, and there is a birth pool, which many women find beneficial to use. Birthing partners are limited to 3 maximum.
The Labour Ward can supply pain relief such as entonox (gas and air), pethidine and there is a 24-hour epidural service.
If you think you're in labour, please telephone for advice on 01753 634520 and speak to our midwifery team, who are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If your waters have broken, or your contractions are fairly strong, i.e. every 5 minutes, lasting 40-45 seconds, the midwife may advise you to come to the hospital for an assessment either in our Foetal Assessment Unit or on the Labour Ward, and you will be seen as soon as possible after your arrival.
Following assessment by a midwife, if you are not in established labour, you may be asked to go home and return later once your labour has progressed.
Your partner is free to stay with you throughout your labour and delivery. Following delivery you can opt to recover on our Postnatal Ward 22 or The Astor Suite if you have booked a room, see also Obs & Gynae other services.
