Help us to reduce the spread of infection

Can visitors and patients help reduce the risk of infection?

Yes! Everyone can help reduce infection. While the infection control team is responsible for these things, everyone can help prevent the spread of infection in the hospital. Here are a few points that may help you to help us reduce the risk of infection:

  • Don’t visit if you are unwell or have been unwell in the last few days, especially with a cold or upset stomach
  • Ensure you wash your hands before you eat, or if you are a patient and are unable to go to the sink, use the hand wipes provided
  • Wash or use a hand wipes after you have been to the toilet
  • Feel free to use the alcohol gel which is placed at the end of the beds (the point of care)
  • Speak to the sister or matron in charge if you are visiting a patient and are unsure if you should be taking special precautions.
  • Let the infection control team know if you have any concerns relating to infection prevention and control in the Trust by callilng 01753 633641.

Where can I find alcohol gel to clean my hands?

Promoting hand hygiene amongst patients and visitors might raise the profile of hygiene generally but it is unlikely to reduce the transmission of microorganisms that cause healthcare associated infection (NPSA, 2008).

In line with current evidence and WHO guidelines in the healthcare setting (WHO,2009) the alcohol handrub is now placed at the end of beds - the point of care - and in strategic areas on the ward that is most beneficial to patient safety, and infection prevention and control.
